So, a report in Politico says that David Cohen, President Joe Biden’s choice to be the next American ambassador to Ottawa, told the Senate committee reviewing his appointment that “the U.S. is waiting for Justin Trudeau’s long-promised update to Canada’s China policy … [because it, an acceptable, to the USA, Canadian policy towards China is] … key for the U.S. and Canada to improve their collaboration and coordination in taking on the “existential threat that is China.”“
Mr Cohen is an attorney, a former senior executive at Comcast and, above all, a political insider with deep roots in the Democratic Party. He matters and when he speaks I think we can take it as a given that he is reflecting the White House’s view. Mr Cohen also has deep roots in the American Jewish community and is a well known fundraiser and advocate for Jewish-American causes, including Israel. Given the proclivities of the Trudeau regime to be pro-Chinese and anti-Israel I suspect that Mr Cohen’s appointment will not be greeted with enthusiasm in the PMO or on Global Affairs.
My guess is that Mr Cohen has already fired President Biden’s first warning shot across Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s bows: “Get on board,” he seems to be saying, “with my policy which says that China is an existential threat to the West.” That position is NOT a polar opposite to former President Donald J Trump’s position which Prime Minister Trudeau’s government and most Canadians found very problematical. I also suspect that President Biden is not unhappy that a well known Jewish-American will be his envoy in a capita that seems to be growing increasingly anti-Israel.
