Kudos to these honourable Liberal MPs …

… the Honourable Wayne Easter, Malpeque, PEI, Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, Beaches – East York, ON, Ken Hardie, Fleetwood – Port Kells, BC, the Honourable John McKay, Scarborough – Guildwood, ON and Jennifer O’Connell, Pickering – Uxbridge, ON …

… who voted, yesterday, for the Conservative motion which called for a better policy to deal with China and a fast decision on Huawei and 5G.

I suspect that Prime Minister is looking, right now, for ways to punish you: perhaps less attractive committee assignments and so on. But you stood up for Canada, yesterday and for your constituents. I salute you.

  1. Hi Ted, there are no problems with our voting with the Opposition on this one. Very, very few votes are ‘whipped’. The drill is simple, we let the Whip’s office know in advance that we intend to vote with an opposition motion or bill, they follow up to make sure we don’t have any information gaps (which they did for me yesterday with a call from the Minister), and we are left to vote as we please.

There were technical issues with the motion, which, if the Tories had accepted our amendment, would have been quickly resolved, quite possibly leading to a near-unanimous vote. With or without the amendment, though, I wanted to send a signal to China on behalf of our constituents, who are sick of the CCP’s bullying and bellicose behaviour.

BTW: the only whipped votes would be on the Throne Speech, anything that runs against the Charter or a budget. The rest, we can go with our own views and conscience.
