Counting the votes

As this blog post goes online (just after 7:00 PM Eastern Standard Time, which is 12:00 midnight Greenwich time) our American neighbours are getting ready to count the votes. We have no idea how long this might take: hours, certainly, likely days. Then there may be court challenges and it is not until over a month from now that the 538 electors of the Electoral College meet on the first Monday after the second Wednesday of December, which I think is 14 December 2020, to cast their votes. If their votes is such that neither President Trump nor Vice President Biden …

… gets 270 votes then it is up to the newly elected House of Representatives to elect a president.

I sincerely hop that we will know the results tomorrow or the day after and that both candidates and their supporters will accept the results graciously. That remains to be seen. In any event I wish our American friends and neighbours well.
