Recent comments by Conservative MP and leadership candidate Deek Sloan have caused quite a stir:
Mr Sloan has tried to explain that his remarks were not based on Dr Theresa Tams’ sex or race but, rather, on her actions during the COVID-19 emergency when she appeared to be too strenuous in toeing the WHO and Trudeau party-lines when others were advocating and taking more drastic actions.
Derek Sloan appears to be a fundamentalist Christian who actually pursued a career in law specifically to defend conservative Christians against “political correctness.” Dr Tam is a highly qualified physician and scientist who has specialized in infectious diseases. She was born in Hong Kong and educated in England and Canada. She does not appear to have any close contacts with the WHO beyond, in her official capacity as one of Canada’s senior public health officers, serving on several of the WHO’s specialized committees.
Now, I agree with John Ibbitson who says, in the Globe and Mail, that “Hastings-Lennox and Addington MP Derek Sloan is a political neophyte who is running for the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada because he believes God has called him to redeem a fallen nation, and who hasn’t the faintest hope of winning.” The race is, I think, between ⇐ Peter MacKay and Erin O’Toole ⇒. But Mr Sloan is playing the same role as Richard Décarie did during the 2019 election campaign. He is giving a generally anti-Conservative media a tool with which to paint the whole Conservative Party as mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging, white-supremacist, social-conservative bigots. And, as Mr Ibbitson says, “departing Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer cravenly refused to condemn Mr. Sloan’s slurs against Dr. Tam … [but] … other Conservative MPs rounded on him, including Calgary MP Michelle Rempel Garner, Edmonton MP Tim Uppal, fellow Eastern Ontario MP Eric Duncan and Wellington-Halton Hills MP Michael Chong.” I really think that Messers MacKay and O’Toole and Dr Leslyn Lewis need to join in the condemnation of Mr Sloan … not for being a racist but, rather, for being stupid, and for allowing himself to become a tool in the hands of the progressive media. I don’t think Mr Sloan is a racist or a sexist. I think he is just naive and not overly bright and I think that if he is a real Conservative then he needs to see the damage he is doing and he needs to withdraw, forthwith, from the leadership race and then pursue his socially conservative goals from the backbench in an O’Toole government.
The Conservative goal must be to defeat Justin Trudeau’s Liberals and give Canada good, honest, sound, principled government, again. Derek Sloan is, now, acting to counter that goal.
