If this story, BREAKING on the Reuters web site, is true: ~ “North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un pledged his commitment to denuclearization and to meet U.S. officials, China said on Wednesday after his meeting with President Xi Jinping …” ~ then it is a HUGE step forward for regional peace and security.
It also means that Xi Jinping has trumped US President Donald Trump, who is now, reduced to the role of “bit player” in the Korea nuclear standoff; further, his trade war against China will look, at best, mean spirited. IF this is true, IF it can be brought to fruition then it means that Xi Jinping is the real “peacemaker” and China, not America, is the “indispensable nation” in Asia.
The next logical step, for China, is to foster less hostile relations between Pyongyang and Seoul, as a prelude to reunification. The next logical step for America is to completely rethink its Asian strategy.
Edited to add:
The South China Morning Post reports, citing Xinhua as one source, that “North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un has promised President Xi Jinping that he will follow through the wishes of his father and grandfather in denuclearising the Korean peninsula, but added he wants assurances from the United States and South Korea … [and] … The leader of the reclusive state made the remarks during a trip to China, his first overseas visit since he became North Korea’s leader, according to the state-run Chinese news agency Xinhua … [but] … Pang Zhongying, a senior fellow at the Ocean University of China in Qingdao, said Kim was securing China’s support ahead of his meeting with US President Donald Trump, scheduled to be held by May … [and, he added] … “By denuclearisation, Kim actually means the whole Korean peninsula should be denuclearised and that the nuclear weapons deployed by the US in South Korea should be withdrawn,” Pang said. “Can the US really accept that request? The gesture means that the chance of a significant breakthrough between Kim and Trump may be slim.”“
That puts the diplomatic ball in President Trump’s court. Kim will likely offer “denuclearization” in a form that President Trump cannot accept but that might appeal to South Korea. President Trump risks being isolated and cast into the role of deal-breaker ~ neither of which are likely to bother him. But Xi Jinping will emerge as a sincere peace-maker.
