I’m pretty sure that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was focused on his Canadian paymasters, mainly in big labour, the Laurentian Elites and amongst Quebec voters, when, in Asia, for meetings aimed a resurrecting the Tarns Pacific Partnership trade deal after the bumbling buffoon who is President of the United States torpedoed it, he insulted his trade partners and embarrassed his own trade minister when he raised brand new, last minute objections.
But now, it appears, from an article in the Australian Financial Review “Australia and other nations have all but shut the door on Canada joining the region’s premier security and strategic forum, the East Asia Summit, after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau torpedoed plans to revive the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact … [although] … Canada has been pressing for several years to join the 18-member EAS and has specifically sought Australia’s support to facilitate its entry. Former prime minister Kevin Rudd encouraged the United States’ entry in 2011 … [and] … Apart from diplomatic requests, Mr Trudeau asked Malcolm Turnbull for his advocacy when the pair met on the sidelines of the Group of 20 leaders summit in Hamburg, Germany … [however] … after Mr Trudeau’s actions in Vietnam on Friday night, when he stood up 10 fellow leaders at a meeting on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic and Co-operation Summit, which had been called to kick-start the TPP, Canada’s prospects of being helped in to the EAS are more remote than ever, senior sources said … [and] … From Australia’s point of view, there was little appetite to help and this was shared more generally by others who were stood up.“
I commented, at the time, that our self absorbed, narcissistic prime minister had “screwed the pooch” in his dealings with Japanese Prime Minister Abe and Australian prime Minister Turnbull and all the other leaders, and now it appears that karma has turned around and paid him back. Individuals, even prime ministers, reap what they sow … Prime Minister Trudeau treated important world leaders, leaders of G7 and G20 countries, like country bumpkins and now Canada is likely to shut out of an important strategic forum … all because Justin Trudeau is campaigning for re-election in 2019 rather than promoting and protecting Canada’s vital interests in the world.
“The EAS,” the Australian Financial Review article explains, “comprises the 10 ASEAN Nations plus Australia, New Zealand, Japan ,China, India, South Korea, the US and Russia, and the appetite among the nations for Canada to join was already low because they are unconvinced of Mr Trudeau’s commitment to serious long-term strategy and defence … [and] … “Under Trudeau, Canada has increased its advocacy to join the EAS but adding Canada is not on the EAS agenda. This is an ASEAN-led forum so the disinterest is across the region,” said a source … [but, that source added] … “The EAS is considered a strategic and security forum, focused on practical measures to improve regional co-operation and certainty, not just rhetoric.”At a time of global uncertainty and conflict it is notable that the regional countries are focused on the need to maintain US involvement in the region but do not seem to consider Canada adding substance to the group.”“
So, Justin Trudeau has sacrificed Canada’s important strategic interests for his own, selfish, partisan political tactical needs … what a clown!
Canada needs new, responsible, adult leadership in 2019 … the sort that only The Honourable Andrew Scheer and his solid, experienced, honest team of Conservatives can provide.
