Is this the best that could happen?

There is a provocative (hopeful?) article in The Independent headlined: “Art of the Deal co-author predicts Donald Trump is about to resign.” The article says that “The co-author of Donald Trump’s memoir The Art of the Deal has predicted the US trump13President is going to resign by autumn if not sooner … [and] … Tony Schwartz, who claims to have ghostwritten the 1987 best-selling business book, argued Mr Trump is on the brink of stepping down and said he would be shocked if his presidency lasts until the end of the year … [further] … Mr Schwartz, who has been a vocal critic of President Trump and spent 18 months interviewing and shadowing him in the 1980’s, suggested he would negotiate a deal for immunity in the Russia investigation in exchange for giving up his seat in the Oval Office.

Let me be clear: I detest President Trump; I think he is a semi-literate bully and a buffoon. He may go down as the worst president in history, even worse than James Buchan, Warren Harding, Millard Filmore or Franklin Pierce. He is not, however, the worst or the most dangerous leader in the world: Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Asia and Europe have a virtual monopoly on those …

… but he is a weak, inept and (probably) corrupt or, at the very least, very dishonest one.

Mike_Pence_official_portraitI hope President Trump will resign, sooner rather than later. I think Vice President Pence ~ a man for whom I would not have voted, unless someone like Mrs Clinton was the only other choice, will make an adequate president … not good, maybe not even average, but, certainly, head and shoulders better than President Trump. It doesn’t matter why President Trump resigns … it may be out of fear of criminal prosecution or just out of frustration; resignation is better than impeachment and anything is better, for America, than what Missouri state Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal hopes might come to pass. But, President Trump is bad for America and he’s bad for a world that, right now, really needs some leadership from someone. Emmanuel Macron, Theresa May, Angela Merkel and Justin Trudeau are not up to the job, and while I don’t doubt that Xi Jinping is prepared to take on the task I doubt we are ready to follow him; I know I’m not!

That means we want an American leader … Donald Trump is not that person; maybe Vice President Pence can rise to the task.
