Newsweek reports that China continues to upgrade and enhance the military capabilities of the “artificial islands established in the contested waters of the South China Sea, a direct challenge to U.S. foreign policy, according to the latest report by a Washington think tank.” The Newsweek article cites reports “released Thursday by the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI), a branch of the nonpartisan Center for Strategic and International Studies. The report, “China’s Big Three Near Completion,” uses satellite imagery to detail new military and dual-use installations on three of the internationally contested Spratly Islands.“
The images are pretty convincing …
… they appear to show new radar and missile facilities on at least two of the disputed “reefs” …
This is a very direct challenge to the United States.
How will, how can America respond?
The biggest threat to peace in Asia is North Korea. America needs Chinese help to contain the DPRK. Is giving China undisputed control over the South China Seas the price that America must pay? What about Malaysia? the Philippines? Taiwan? Vietnam?
Happy 4th of July, America!
