Moderation wins

We, Canadian Conservatives, should all be congratulating fellow conservative Mark Rutte, whose People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) handily won the plurality of seats in the Netherlands parliament (31± seats, out of 150, according to exit polls) while Geert Wilders’ populist, anti-Islam Party for Freedom (PVV) was held to a (still very respectable) 19± seats:

This should tell us all that moderation can win, even when anti-immigrant, populist forces seem to be on the rise.

Mark Rutte, who I have described before, as a “model” conservative leader, appears to have run a campaign that demonstrably heard, listened to, understood and responded to some of the deeper fears that many Dutch people, but he, and others, offered more than just hope to alleviate fear, he (and others) offered less extreme ways to preserve Dutch values than did Mr Wilders, and they offered concrete proposals to keep the Netherlands prosperous and free.

There’s a lesson here for Canadian Conservative leadership candidates.
