‘Tis the season

Today, here is Canada, is the 4th Sunday in Advent in the Christian Liturgical calendar …

… and most of us are, now, preoccupied with our preparations, large and small, for what may be the world’s biggest celebration, even in countries where Christians are minorities …

… and even in places where a few extremists want to try to ban all but festivals that conform to the majority’s religious views:

I have no special brief for Christmas, except as a time to share good cheer with friends and family, wherever you all may be …

… let us treat each other, even our political opponents and, yes, even our enemies, with dignity and the elementary level of respect that is everyman’s due. We may fear and detest, even hate ideologies and tyranny and barbaric practices but, underneath everything, we are all human beings, sharing a planet. We may disagree, we may fight, we may even have to kill one another, but let us remember this: even in the midst of a dreadful, bloody war, this actually happened … once …

… we, political opponents and those in different countries and armies can still treat each other with basic human decency and some measure of civility.
