About six months ago I commented on how we can manage to NOT win the next election. Canadian social a629cfc74a313d524b5333418b0924b5media is, currently, full of hate and fear-mongering from what a friend of mine has dubbed “Neandercons” ~ our, Canadian, version of some of the more extreme examples of the “paleo-conservatives” who infest at least part of the once-great Republican Party in the United States. These people spread fear and hatred of e.g. maxresdefaultMuslims, of anything that is different or outside of their own, small, narrow “comfort zone>” They fill conservative social media pages with arrant nonsense and, in the process, smear all Conservatives with the big lie that we are a party of fearful, slobbering, mouth breathing racists and bigots. The Liberals, the left-wing media and the Laurentian Elites don’t need to “brand” us as Neanderthals, ~ some conservatives do that branding on their behalf.

The latest is a report that the RCMP will allow female members to wear a hijab … just as the Canadian military has done, for years,  and other Canadian police forces do …

… but on some conservative web sites the topic became, almost immediately, an irrational and totally baseless fear of full-face covering: a niqab, which, as far as I know, no police swat-team-leon-county-florida-570x332force in the western world permits or plans to introduce. Now, admittedly a few niqab-1police force SWAT teams wear face masks that look pretty much like niqabs, but the purpose is different. Also, let’s be clear: fear, baseless fear of the stranger, irrational fear of the “other” is what drives weak-minded people to hatred and bigotry. My experience is that stupid people are, generally, more prone to the kinds of fear that lead to e.g. Islamophobia and racism. To be fair, I know some intelligent, well-educated people (the two do not always go hand-in-hand) who are timid and afraid of the “other” and so on, but I think it is more normal to find such fear amongst those who do not think very clearly or very well or very often.

We need to defend free speech, to allow free speech in our own discourse and to encourage it, and, sometimes, acceptable free speech includes spewing hatred and it certainly includes stupidity. But when it is stupid, when it promotes racism and bigotry we Conservatives, and would-be Conservative leaders, especially, need to condemn it in no uncertain terms.

In my opinion, the “Neandercons” are a bigger threat to the CPC in 2019 than are the Laurentian Elites and Liberals.

  1. You are right of course, but then irrational fear of the different is not confined to conservatives there is a few liberals that appear to be afraid of change/difference as well I would say this is prevalent through out western society at the moment.
