The Toronto Star says that Democracy Watch, a generally somewhat left-liberal and anti-corporation advocacy group, says that “Justin Trudeau should be barred from any role in deciding the fate of terror suspect Mohamed Harkat because the prime minister’s brother is lobbying the government on the issue … [and] … Trudeau should publicly recuse himself from involvement in the file.”
In fact, returning to the “screw the pooch” meme, this time it is Alexandre Trudeau who has done that, and, sadly for him, I believe it is Mohamed Harkat who must pay the (high) price. Alexandre (Sasha) Trudeau has laid a veritable minefield, not just for his brother, the prime minister, but for the entire Trudeau cabinet. There is no safe way through it. It really doesn’t matter what Prime Minister Trudeau or his Immigration Minister, The Honourable John McCallum, or his Justice Minister, The Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould might think (and I believe they are both honourable people), the perception will be, already is, I suspect, that “the fix is in” … unless the government takes a totally hands off approach and continues to support deportation.
Any other action will convince too many Canadians that the Librano$ are back …
So, Prime Minister and Ministers McCallum and Wilson-Raybould: it’s a minefield, a politically deadly one, don’t go there! In fact, prime minister, you probably need to publicly state that you are adopting a 100% “hands off” approach and that your government is simply proceeding with the previous government’s plan to deport M. Harkat. I don’t think it matters what you or your brother or your ministers think … courts have spoken, officials have acted, properly. I don’t even see how principles can be strong enough to justify any further involvement in this case.
